About our 2008 Good Neighbor Award Winners
Executive Vice President, Realtor®
GSH Real Estate
Caroline McCartney shows that the skills successful REALTORs® possess can also be applied to exceptional community service. Caroline has worked to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for over 16 years. St. Jude is a research and treatment facility for pediatric cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, and helps to save children from all over the world regardless of their ability to pay. McCartney has been a volunteer since 1990 and was St. Jude Dream Home Chairperson of the Year in 2007. Helping to raise almost $1.2 million she coordinated the sale of 11,000 tickets for the raffle of a luxury home valued at $750,000. The event had a net income of $900,000 and one of the lowest cost ratios in the fundraiser's history. McCartney, who grew up near the Memphis based institution, says "I never had any children of my own. I can't think of a better way to give back then helping children. It felt like where I needed to be." St. Jude costs more than $530 million per year to run, most of that generated from donations and fundraisers and treats more than 5,000 children a year, and is something that could not be done without the efforts of people like Caroline McCartney.
Keller Williams Real Estate
Lei Berry from Keller Williams in Blue Bell, PA founded Inter-Faith Housing Alliance over 20 years ago which helps to prevent homelessness of low income families. Berry was inspired by her own experience in 1960 when she was a single mother with no place to live for a year. She has worked diligently to provide temporary housing for people through a network of over 20 local churches and synagogues, where for one month each year three families are housed by the host congregation. Berry expanded Inter-Faith Housing Alliance from a help hotline to a full service nonprofit offering many services to the homeless. Berry also single-handedly raised $1.4 million to found Hope Gardens, a transitional apartment complex which helps homeless families get on their feet. Berry says that it is thrilling to know they gave these people a chance.
Prudential Georgia Realty
Sheila Stevens from Prudential Georgia Realty in Suwanee, GA is founder and president of The Sport of Giving Inc., which funds breast cancer treatment and prevention. Stevens started The Sport of Giving in honor of her mother who died of colon cancer at the age of 54. The organization has contributed over $1 million through annual tennis and golf tournaments, running events and other fundraisers, as well as donating $215,000 towards a mammography screening center. Stevens has contributed $7,000 in personal funds and hopes to fulfill why God put her here.
